Decorating Small Spaces In A Budget And Space-Friendly Way

Nowadays everyone is locked up in their homes due to the continuous and rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus, which is highly contagious and can even cause death. However, staying at home feels good for few days, maybe months, but after that life suddenly starts becoming monotonous, what to do then?

Everybody is getting impatient to have some changes in their lifestyle, some change of environment, however, going out is not a very safe option still. Hence, changing the place where you are dwelling the most is the next best option. For bachelors, however, even this option becomes quite tough to plan and manage, owing to the inadequacy of space and financial backings. While house owners can easily make a hold in their walls, for bachelors, that could lead to a deduction from their security deposits. Being a bachelor and a 9-5 working person, I can very well understand this dilemma. But before we go to the decorating idea, let's first see why is it necessary to have a lazy corner?

Our brain catches the repetitive actions that we do. For instance, when you lie down on your bed, a feeling of drowsiness overcome you and you just don’t feel like moving, whereas the moment you switch back to your work chair you become active again, the reason we do this is because our brain associates the place with the task that we do for a longer period there. When you have a lazy corner, your brain will associate that place as a place to let go of your stress and worry and will make you feel relaxed. That is why it is so important to have a place, where you can just relax and enjoy your “me-time.”

Now for people coming up and saying, how do I do it when I don’t have enough space or money? Well, I will answer your question right now, with instances from my life. I am an independent woman living in a rented apartment, with a very strict owner, who forbids making holes in the wall, and my living room, even though very spacious cannot be used as a chill place, because I need some isolation from people while relaxing. So, I thought of re-decorating my small bedroom.

But before you start there are some pre-decoration things that you need to do and maintain regularly or frequently.

  • Always keep your room clean.

  • Keep candles and incense sticks or cones.

  • Allow enough ventilation and sunlight in your room.

  • Keep your things arranged.

  • If you have a washroom attached to your room, keep it clean too.

  • How to decorate your small space?

Here are some great tips to decorate your room-

  • Choose the place wisely. It is best if it is near to any window, in that way you can get some fresh air.

  • Plan out a layout in your mind, regarding where do you want to keep what.

  • Rather than choosing fixed chairs and tables, choose something that can be easily moved, such as a floor mattress, a bean bag, or a bean lounger. (I went for the bean lounger since it is much more relaxing and supports my body posture).

  • Make sure, you still have a place to walk and the room is not over-cramped with things.

  • Go for furniture that can be hanged from the wall and will support moderate weight and can be installed with easy peel-off adhesives and hooks, so that no drilling work is needed.

  • Always choose your color shade very wisely. If your seating arrangement is of bright colors (yellow, orange, red) or dark colors (black, grey, dark blue, brown), keep the background light shaded, you can add pastel shades to it.

  • Use some string lights to decorate the wall, rather than choosing the multi-colored one, choose the ones which are labeled as “warm white”. This type of light will be soothing for your eyes and will also give you enough light to read (if you are a bookworm like me).

  • As a finishing touch, use some charms, such as chiming key chains or dream catchers, to give the corner that dreamy and relaxing look, that everyone desires. You can also use sticky notes and write small quotes and decorate your wall. Multicolor sticky notes enhance the look of the corner.

This is how my corner looks after decorating (before the dream catcher)-

Even though the steps are sounding very elaborate, if you have the things ready, it will hardly take more than an hour. And it is very cheap to do and things like these can be easily obtained from shopping platforms such as Amazon. So, there you go, your own place, your own world, where zen has set in and peace retains.
