How To Pick A Proper Roommate?

So, have you finally decided to move out to another city or a place of your own and want to live independently? But then you flip through the house renting websites and discover that rents are quite high, and you need to share it with someone. And here comes the tough part, choosing a flatmate and living and adopting with a stranger. But with some pointers in mind, there is a high chance your new flatmate will turn out to be your new best friend.

Advertising-

You can advertise in two ways, one where you have already found a house and searching for a new flatmate, or two where you are searching for a flatmate first and then will search the house together based on the requirements of both individuals.

In the first case, it is necessary that you properly give all information about the house, for instance, how many rooms, how many washrooms, utilities, etc. Make sure you mention the rent along with the price of other utilities is applicable. Click good pictures of the house and upload them with your advisement. Also give some information about yourself including your likes and dislikes, for instance, your food preferences.

In the second case, you need to give an elaborate description of yourself. Jazz it up with anecdotes and jokes and emojis. People don’t like to read only texts, when you write it in a funny way, you will be getting more responses.

Choosing the one-

After putting up the advertisements, there can be a lot of responses and it may sometimes just feel like too much at a time. In this case, start by sorting out the people whose interests match the most with you, and those whose interests may not match as such but are willing to pay the rent without any arguments. (BEWARE- In these responses there can be scammers too, and you can identify them with qualities such as being too eager to give the money and not willing to spur many details).

Next, try talking more with the people you feel can be a good flatmate, if its possible do a video meeting with them. Talk to them about all your preferences and it will be easier for you to choose the one.

Security check-

After you have finalized a person and are willing to live in the same flat, the last but most important step is to run a background check on them. It is a very vital part, and you need to do that with their consent. Background checks can be done by the local authorities. Trust me when I say that choosing the wrong roommate can be very fatal to you.

Below are some questions that you can ask the people who you think can be your future flatmate-

  • Where are you from?

  • What do you do?

  • Will you be comfortable with a video session?

  • Are you comfortable with the rent?

  • What are your preferences?

  • Are you comfortable with my preferences?

  • Do you have any more questions regarding the flat?

  • With your consent can I run a background check on you?

  • Do you have any critical health issues that I should be aware of?

  • Do you have pets? (If you have a pet then it will be do you have any issues regarding my pet?)

With these pointers in your mind, your chance of having a great roommate is much more. All these points are from my personal experiences, and I have had my bad share of roommates when even coming back home from the office used to feel like a task. But then I changed my place and got a new flatmate and I can’t even start to say how delighted I am now, because when you are living with the right person, a house transforms into a HOME.

HAPPY LIVING!!
