The Western Ghats in the monsoon looks like somebody has freshly painted a story with misty colors. The rain does make it hard to reach a place and mud is also there, but if you negotiate a little bit then nature will captivate you in its beauty.

People flock in various destinations this time, but for lone wolves, there is one place that still maintains it’s serenity and avoids overcrowding, Matheran. With an elevation of 800m, Matheran lies in the foothills of the Sahyadris. This place follows the rules of eco-tourism, which makes it an ideal destination for nature lovers rather than party goers.

The road to Matheran is characterized by the gorgeous Sahyadri ranges covered in a velvety green fabric. The way hides in the thick mists and clouds, which make the traveler, wander off in the sleepiness of this small town.

Due to the eco-tourism rules, vehicles emitting smoke are to be kept in the foothills, and then the hiking starts. In case, you are not so much of a walk lover, then there are horses for you to ride. The first five seconds on a horse does seem quite scary, but once you understand that the animal has no intention of throwing you in a ditch you are safe but that is until you try to tickle it. For the elderly, there is an arrangement of manual carts.

Matheran’s beauty and serenity is not the only thing that attracts tourists. The hotels in Matheran offer luxury stays and budget-friendly deals. I visited Matheran for two days. And even though it was pouring heavily, I found peace in the cold mountain air and the lonely streets.

So, while the monsoon is setting in, take your car and take a break. Once you have done the trip, keep a bookmark for this memory.
