Pulling Off The Gothic Look- A Guide To Goth Makeup

Since my school days, I have been very curious about different cultures and their outlooks. Fashion makes a big statement when it comes to distinguishing one culture from another. The one that I was especially attracted to was the Goth culture.

I used to have friends who had their Goth club and maintained their outlook as much as possible. Music was the first thing that attracted me, the words and the rhythms used to create a feeling of emptiness inside my soul and that is when I decided to dive deep and become a member of the club.

The first hindrance that I faced was the fashion, especially the makeup bit. At those times I was an amateur in the makeup category. So I started following trends and each day started adding more and more perfection to the act.

But now as an adult, I realized that following only one culture is not possible, especially if you are not a birth child of that culture. So gone are the days of my intense Goth-ism. But today here I am giving you a makeup routine if you, like me want to indulge in it.

Face-

While Gothic fashion doesn’t only include makeup, it is one of the key factors. So, let’s start with the face.

  • Choose a moisturizer that gives a matt finish. With the tip of your index and middle finger feel the high points of your face like cheekbones and the forehead curve. Then dab the moisturizer and blend it well. If you are living in a humid climate, then skip this step.

  • Next comes the primer, this will be the base of your make up, so make sure while you are using the primer you choose a transparent and preferably a gel-based one. It will be an add-on if it has SPH in it.

  • The third step is one of the most important ones, i.e. choosing the right foundation. While in normal makeup we choose foundations and concealer matching our skin tone, for gothic makeup choose a foundation two tones lighter than your normal skin tone. This will give your face a pale but natural look. While dabbing the foundation, the easiest way is to first make triangles under the eyes to the mid-cheek, on the joint of the nose and forehead, and the chin and then dab it in a circular motion. It helps to avoid lumps.

  • Lastly, brush off some loose face powder (preferably white) to enhance the pale look.

Eyes-

One of the most enhanced parts of gothic makeup is the eyes.

  • Dab some pea amount foundation on your eyelids, this will help to hold the make-up for a longer amount of time.

  • This is the fun part, you can choose two or three eye shadows and play with the colors. But keep in mind whatever color you are choosing should be a dark one. Colors like black, grey, blood red, steel blue go the best. Apply the lighter one first then the darker one along the crease and blend it with a brush. Brush some on your lower lids too to give a dramatic effect.

  • The next step is to apply eyeliner. If you are doing it for the first time, then don’t try a wing, you are going to regret it, just apply through the shape of your eyes. If you have small eyes apply a thin line because thick lines can make your eyes look smaller. In the lower lid, you can use a white eye pencil which will add to the glamour.

  • Use a lash extending mascara and not a curling mascara on your both upper and lower eyelashes.

  • If you want you can use a brow pencil to give your brows a magnetic look.

Lips-

Many people confuse between various lip shades (I did too in the start). So I will try to make it easier for you.

  • Dab a pea amount of foundation on your lips to give it an even smoothness.

  • Lip liner is one of the most basic things in this makeup. Choose a darker color lip liner like dark brown, maroon, blood-red, or black.

  • Choose a lipstick that compliments your lip liner. Like if you are choosing a dark brown lip liner then choose a dark red lipstick. Then blend the lip liner and the lipstick to give a gradient effect. People who are confident enough to pull off the black lipstick look can opt between a dark maroon or blood-red lip liner. I personally love the dark maroon and black combination.

  • Dust a little loose powder on your lips to give it an intense matte effect.

Finishing touch-

  • When you are done with everything spray some make-up fixer on your face.

  • Put on a choker.

  • Pull out that black t-shirt you never thought you will wear. And you are ready for the club.

So this is a basic gothic makeup guide for you. It will take time to settle in, but gradually you will get better. and it is a racist myth that it is only for white people, any person can pull off the Gothic look if they are confident enough. Just remember one thing, that gothic makeup will be a head-turner wherever you go, so keep this in mind and slay it.
