Short Story: A Dead End

Startled by discomfort and sharp inflicting pain in her leg she woke up in the middle of the night. This is not new to her, these days she has gotten quite adaptive to the pain. With her senses coming back from the lagging numbness she understood the world around her has fallen asleep. The only light in her room was the foggy dimly lit yellow bulb. With one hand she lifted the curtains from the window adjacent to her bed. As the night wind blew her hair over her face she closed her eyes and felt her soul walking out the window to the lonely streets below, barefoot she crossed the hindrances that have kept her imprisoned till now.

Leaving the bustling city behind, following the trails of the stars she walked and walked on the road to nowhere land. The city lights faded away slowly with the sounds of dry autumn leaves crushing beneath her feet. As she looked, she saw the vast ocean lying in front of her welcoming her to venture its darkest depths. As the waves laid out a gala carpet for her, she started walking towards the horizon where the ocean meets the sky, the aurora lights carved a painting above her head lighting up her path in a maze of blue and green. The coherence of all her emotions and the breeze beneath her breath made her forget the numbness and as she untied her hair they flew as like a bird embracing freedom after being caged for long. The clouds came down as she reached near the horizon, taking her high above the stars. The moon gave her a silvery veil knitted with the wind. She approached towards the lofty mountains, the cold touch of the rugged rocks felt like the touch of an alchemist standing for years after years slowly unbinding the magic inside.

As she opened her eyes she found herself in her dimly lit room, cold from the wind blowing through the window. She approached the edge of the bed and reached out to take her crutch, while Sylvia Plath’s poem rang in her ears “I shut my eyes and the world drops dead, I lift my lid and all is born again.”
