The Single Malt Whiskeys of India (Part 3)

Amrut- The Elixir Of Life

The third Indian single malt whiskey is the one which is also known as the “Elixir Of Life.” Amrut which directly translates to “Nectar of Life” is termed as the third-best single malt whiskey in the world by Jim Murray, who rated this whiskey 82 out of 100. Amrut Fusion changed the way the world used to think about Indian whiskeys. Amrut entered the global premium liquor market with the first launch and was able to make better impressions than its competitors.

JN Radhakrishna Rao Jagdale first launched Amrut Distilleries Ltd in Bangalore in the year 1948. This distillery used to manufacture IMFL. In the year 1987, the current distillery producing the premium whiskeys was opened in Kambipura. 4th February 2010, Amrut Distilleries held a taste session in Bangalore for its first single malt whiskey. That time the whiskey was only retailed locally in Karnatak. In November 2013, Amrut was launched in Mumbai. In North America, the brand launched the whiskey in 2010 through Purple Valley Imports.

Now this whiskey can be found in Canada, Australia, Denmark, Belgium, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Singapore, Netherlands, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, UK, USA, and Taiwan. Due to India's state, wise liquor laws the owner of the distillery decided to branch out more in other countries than in India.

Bangalore has a tropical savanna climate which helps in aging the whiskey faster. The one unique thing of this distillery is that it went against using automation and relied more on physical labor, creating employment opportunities which also include women. The distillery produces around 10,000 cases of Amrut single malt in a year.

There are 11 variances of the Amrut Single Malt Whiskey. But among them, the ones given below are the most notable and have higher consumer count-

  • Amrut Fusion Single Malt Whisky

  • Amrut Intermediate Sherry

  • Amrut Kadhambam

And there are three limited editions which are-

  • Amrut Two Continents Single Malt Whisky

  • Amrut Greedy Angel

  • Amrut Double Cask

The Amrut Fusion and Greedy Angels

Though these are the most notable ones, the Amrut Fusion Single Malt won more hearts. The first taste note of this whiskey is dark chocolate, coffee, gentle peat which feels very rich but oaky and the last notes are of hints of marmalade, sweetness, and fruity finish. The costliest Amrut whiskey till now is the Amrut 10 Year Old Greedy Angels Peated Rum Cask which is a limited edition and costs around INR 64,288 (USD 874).

With this, we complete the story of Indian Single Malt whiskeys. Now I am just waiting for you guys to try these out and let me know how they felt on the palette.
